Coming up with a list of resolutions has become a time-honoured New Year tradition. Here are 5 resolutions you should consider adding to your list! But your resolution shouldn’t just be a sentence on your paper that you won’t tick off, let’s take a look at how you can actually achieve them!
1. Catch More Sleep
Did you know that Singaporeans are most deprived of sleep? According to the World Sleep day, our average sleeping hour is less than 7.5 hours!
Regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including but not limited to obesity, heart disease and diabetes(shortening your life expectancy).
Try to make getting ENOUGH sleep your priority this New Year. Start a regular sleep schedule, going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day; exercise regularly; and if you have trouble sleeping, consider Yoga ,Meditation and/or essential oils. Cutting down on the caffeine is important for all the coffee lovers out there! Opt for black tea which contains lesser caffeine. Finally, avoid napping or sleeping in during the weekends. It disrupts your sleep pattern which makes it difficult for you to get back to your sleep schedule.
2. Unplug From Gadgets
On average, the Cyber wellness centre gets 8 to 10 calls a week from parents seeking help for kids’ excessive use of smart devices. 7 out of 10 Singaporeans are actively using social media. It is also becoming a common sight to catch a family sitting together at restaurants but completely disengaged.
Reconnect with the people around you this New Year and put your gadgets away during a conversation. Try to go to places (eg. outdoors) where you have a limited connection to Wifi. Some may find it hard to stay away from their gadgets, download an app that limits your connection to the Internet.
3. Broaden your horizons
Based on latest available global statistics, Singapore residents in 2015 worked the 2nd longest week in developed cities around the world, clocking in 45.6 hours, trailing behind Hong Kong. Overwork often leads to stress and health issues.
Downtime is necessary to rejuvenate and restore your mind and body. Consider taking a vacation or Yoga retreat to recharge yourself. Travel beyond the little red dot this year! Travelling has shown to enhance creativity and challenge the cognitive flexibility (ability to face new and unexpected condition).
4. Cut the sweet talk
Approximately 430 000 Singaporeans aged between 18 to 69 are found to be prediabetic, according to a study by Ministry of Health. Cutting sugar is a great place to start for a resolution. Sugar, no matter, where it’s coming from, does tend to increase the fat levels in the blood resulting in higher risk for heart disease.
Consider ordering less sugar or even no sugar when your order your daily dose of Kopi or Teh! Even better, simply opt for water as it is the healthiest choice. When shopping for food or drinks, search for items Health Promotion Board’s “Lower in Sugar” or “No Sugar Added” signs.
5. Dust of your sportswear
This is something most of us have on our lists – to exercise more. Challenge yourself to jog at least 2 -3 km daily, or take part in group training like Yoga or Weight Loss Pilates. For those looking for something more creative, try Barre, Aerial Yoga and/or Wheel Yoga!
