Hot Yoga is passe!
Hot yoga classes have been popular in the last 2 decades and almost all yoga studios in Singapore offer hot yoga. The heavy perspiration during hot yoga made many people think that aids in weight loss or detoxification. However, with the room being heated up to 40 degrees C, there is a real risk of dehydration and even heat stroke. This is because our own body produces heat when we exercise and Yoga can be considered a moderate exercise particularly in hot yoga where the practices can increase your heart beat. Hot yoga literally gives a “heat-on- heat” effect which can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. When our body heat rises, we begin to sweat to cool the body down. However, the room is heated up to 40oC and there is no way the body can cool down. In addition, with some time up to 30-40 people in one class all emitting body heat and increases the humidity of the room. The over sweating causes dehydration, increasing heart rate, decreasing blood pressure and one can start to feel dizzy and nauseating. Hot yoga also does not help in detoxification as most of the perspiration is water. True toxin elimination comes from kidneys and liver and some from colon. The sweating results in losing water weight mainly.
