Check Out These Must-have Essential Oils For Kids!

All of us are familiar with the pleasure that comes from an enjoyable smell, whether it’s the fragrance of a flower, delicious meal, or a scent we associate with fond memories. Some people believe that by activating specific smell receptors in the nose, essential oils causes the brain to send messages to areas of the nervous system that affect our mood.

So, how can essential oils help your child? Essential oils can help calm a child who is anxious or under stress, reduce nausea, discomfort and pain, and promote healthy sleep. These oils are extracted from flowers, roots, leaves, seeds, bark certain plants to help boost your mood or make you feel better. Hence, when used carefully and thoughtfully, the benefits can be amazing!

Here are 4 essential oils for children over the age of 5: Lavender, On Guard, Frankincense and Peppermint!

Most children fight to go to bed because being awake is just so much more fun! However, developing good sleep habits when they are young is a wonderful gift we can give them.  Sleep is so incredibly important, and all of us require more of it! Lavender is a great choice for so many things due to the harmonizing effect it has on the nervous system. Not only does it helps calm the mind it is also the top choice when it comes to fighting insomnia (especially so when it is caused by anxiety and/or stress)!

Take a few drops of Lavender essential oil and diffuse it in the room, fifteen minutes before your child’s bedtime. During their bath time, add some drops into their bath water to soak away stress or apply to the temples and the back of the neck. You can also add a few drops of Lavender to pillows, bedding, or bottoms of feet to promote a restful night’s sleep.

Kids tend to bring all sorts of germs back from school. Sometimes, they fall sick and the entire family ends up catching the bug too! During the height of the cold/flu season, mix a drop with a carrier oil and place it on the chest and the back of neck before heading to school. When inhaled or diffused, Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness.

Set them off on the right track in the morning! Place a drop of Frankincense in the palms (rub them together) and smell it right before heading to school. Alternatively, before putting on shoes and socks, place a little Frankincense (mixed with a carrier oil like almond, coconut, or jojoba) and massage on the soles of the feet to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood.

It is a very popular essential oil and scent in itself. Not only does improve focus, but it also provides an energetic boost, reduce nervousness and even help to stimulate the mind. Peppermint is a wonderful essential oil for kids who are having trouble focusing in school. It has been said to dispel confusion and to counteract mental fatigue due to too much studying.

Energize your day by adding it to a diffuser where your child will be studying and/or rub into areas of tension on your child’s neck, shoulders, and temples.


When it comes to using essential oils it is important to always significantly dilute the oils with a carrier oil (coconut oil) before applying it on their skin. Also, always carry out a test of the essential oil with a carrier oil on a small area before applying freely elsewhere. Most importantly, always supervise children during essential oil usage!
