Not Flexible Also Can Do Yoga

Flexibility is one of the most discussed topics related to Yoga. The common misconception of Yoga is that you should be flexible in order to practice this wonderful complete discipline called Yoga. On social media and also between Yoga classes and Yoga teachers, there is a great emphasis on flexibility. So much so that it seems a prerequisite to start practicing Yoga. Hence, it is important to address this misperception.

Flexibility Can Be Improve With Time & Practice

Being stiff and inflexible does not mean you cannot benefit from Yoga. First of all, Yoga doesn’t have to be viewed as a challenge. You shouldn’t set goals such as doing the split, perform a headstand or wheel pose. Yoga asanas should be considered as a tool to explore our own bodies focusing on the journey itself and not on achievement. Such poses may become accessible to you as you continue with your Yoga practice.

Flexibility can be improved with time and practice, no matter at what age one starts Yoga. You may not achieve a full split, but you will certainly improve from Day 1. Improving flexibility is crucial in preventing injuries as it helps your joints to move through the full range of motion and helps your muscles to work more effectively.

 

It’s All About Listen To Your Body

Yoga is so much more than that fitness discipline we see Instagram or Facebook. Well, Yoga is a versatile discipline and you can easily switch it to the most dynamic and physical side with some Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa or Hot Yoga. You can explore your body in a complete combo of breathing techniques and Yoga asanas with Hatha Yoga or you can switch it to the relaxing restorative side of it with Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga. It’s all up to you and what your body needs at any given point in time.

You don’t need to be flexible to practice Yoga and there has to be no pain during the practice. You have to practice in a completely pain-free range and try to listen to your body as this is the most important and precious thing in the world. In Yoga, you have to feel both supported and driven to get better in time. You need to motivate yourself to explore your body in every single way. Try to learn how to listen to it and honor it in an intimate, kind, caring and gentle approach. Living this as a journey. Your own journey. Remember this little mantra: a little goes long away! And about flexibility, when you start practicing Yoga, you will realize that this is not that big deal anymore, there is so much more than that and your journey towards the best version of yourself has just begun.
